A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last arrow the Tallow sisters ever made was too fine for the bow that was left to them. Their father had fletched in goose feathers cut in chevrons, bound with thread dyed from madder root, and he had set a diamond of hammered tin on the head because a lord had once promised him a sword for it and never paid.

When the castle at Harrowmere fell into the river and the keep split down the middle, the sisters kept the workshop in the lee of the gatehouse. Ysolde strung the bow each morning and Ada tied the dots along the shaft, one for every night the wind had stayed out of the north. Nobody asked what the circles were for. The carters who came up the old road paid in salt and went home without looking at the walls.

One winter a stranger rode up with a hound and a hole in her cloak and asked for a single arrow that would fly true over the water. Ada gave her the fine one. The stranger shot it from the broken battlement and the arrow crossed the whole mere and struck the bell of the drowned chapel, which rang once, clear, for the first time in forty years.

The sisters never saw the stranger again. In spring they found a sack of silver on the gatehouse step and a note that said only that the shaft had come home. Ysolde put the tin diamond in a drawer. Ada tied one more dot on the last bolt that season, and the wind, for once, did not argue.
