A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dev had worked nights on Ward 7 for eleven years, and in all that time nobody had asked him for a map. At twenty past three, Mr Halloran pushed his drip stand to the nurses' station and laid a paper napkin on the counter, smoothing it flat with the side of his hand. On it, in blue biro, he had drawn a single line that climbed from the bottom edge, looped back on itself four or five times like a pulled thread, and ended at a small dot near the top.

"Where's that supposed to be?" Dev asked.

"Where I'm going. Bay four keeps turning into a corridor, and every time I reach the top the door's gone." Halloran tapped the dot twice. "My lad says I'm going round in circles. I say the circles are the way."

Dev pinned the napkin beside the ward plan on the wall and traced each loop with his finger. Left past the linen store. Back by the lifts. Round the sluice, then up the long ramp that nobody used after midnight. They went together at the pace the drip stand allowed, Halloran counting the turns under his breath and Dev keeping one hand near his elbow without making a thing of it.

At the top of the ramp the corridor opened into the glass walkway over the car park. The sky beyond it had already started to grey over the multi-storey, and the lights in the lot were going pale and useless. Halloran stopped, looked out for a long moment, and pressed one finger to the glass. "There," he said. "That's the dot." Dev folded the napkin into his breast pocket and kept it there until the end of his shift.
