Black fine line tattoo of a spiralling unalome with dots above and below, ending in a lotus flower, on skin in a greyscale photo.

Fine line unalome and lotus tattoo

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a thin, continuous line that curls into a spiral pattern at the top, then descends to an open lotus flower with several pointed petals. Two small dots sit above the spiral and one below the flower. The linework is uniform and fine, in solid black ink, and the photo is greyscale against plain skin with the design centred in a tall frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The survey drones had mapped the drowned flats in a single pale line, and I was the only surveyor left who still trusted a pencil over the feed. I sat on the seawall at Silvertown with the old sheet across my knees, tracing the river as it wandered out of the city, looping back on itself where the meanders had silted shut under four centuries of tide.

Where the channel turned in on itself, the pencil thickened into a coil, a knot of cut-off water that never quite died. My grandmother called it the place where the river forgets which way is out. As a girl I thought of it as the spot where the map got stubborn, and I used to sit with my finger on it until the tide pushed me off the wall.

Above the coil I had marked two dots for the sluice gates, both rusted open now. Below it the line ran straight and clean down to Beckton, where a crowd of algae rafts had spread across the grey reservoir in a ring of pale petals. It was the only thing in the estuary that opened every morning, whatever the water was doing.

The council wanted the sheet by dusk for the replanting. I drew the last dot where the stem met the surface, then, because the pencil wanted to, a thin line of my own running off the edge of the paper. Nobody would ever read that part. I signed it anyway and climbed back over the wall while the water rose behind me.
