Fine line mountain range on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a mountain range is drawn in thin black linework on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The peaks are outlined with a few simple lines and left unshaded, with a slightly heavier stroke at the base. The skin is pale and the background shows a cafe window, a table and a chair, softly out of focus.

The Surveyor of Veldmarch had one rule for the peaks: draw only what you could walk to. I was twenty-three when I learned why the old rule existed, the autumn the Shelf Pass closed and the Crown sent me up with a leather case of nibs and a mule named Tobit who hated me on principle.

Above the snowline the ranges were not what the maps said. They were smaller and sharper, and they seemed to shift a little when the wind turned, as if they were breathing under a blanket. I sketched them with the finest pen I owned, five strokes for five peaks, leaving the paper bare where the snow should lie. My master had always said the white was the honest part. Shade a mountain and you are only guessing at its shadows.
On the seventh night a girl from the high shepherds' hamlet came down to the camp, barefoot, carrying a lamp shaped like a wren. She asked whether I had drawn the peaks where they stood or where they were meant to stand. I told her I had drawn the view from the third tent. She laughed and said that was the same thing up there.
I came home with forty-one sheets and kept only one. At the foot of the drawing I pressed the nib down harder, a single heavy line along the bottom, the way the valley floor holds up everything above it. The Crown called it a fault in the ink. I called it the ground.
