Mountain range tattoo on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a mountain range tattoo on the back of a neck, with the figure's hair visible at the top left. Three peaks sit side by side, drawn with thin outlines and dark shadowed faces on the right-hand slopes. The soft monochrome lighting and plain background keep the focus on the linework and shading.

The fog had sat on Glen Tarrach for three days when Ruth finally swore at the theodolite and dragged me up the last ridge to look. Then the cloud tore open over the col, and there they were: three peaks standing shoulder to shoulder like men who had missed the same bus. Ruth wanted them on the sheet with proper names, and I told her the Ordnance Survey did not name things for the sake of company.

We spent a week taking bearings. The sun came round from the east and lit the left-hand faces clean, but by four in the afternoon the right-hand slopes had already gone dark, as if someone had drawn them with a softer pencil. Ruth hatched those shadows deeper every evening in the hut, saying the light had to be told where to stop. I thought it was sentiment dressed up as draughtsmanship, and I said so, and she laughed and went on hatching.

She left in October for a post in Aberdeen, with a bad chest and a better offer. I stayed on through the winter to close the traverse. On the last clear morning in March I climbed back up alone with the sheet rolled under my arm, and found her pencil in the margin where she had written RUTH'S THREE beside the peaks in small capitals. I had meant to rub it out. I stood there with the eraser in my hand for a long time, and then I put it back in my pocket and took the final bearing on the tallest of them.
