The bell-ringer's dog was called Pell, and he was the only creature in the valley of Orrin who would cross the frozen ford without being asked. The winter the river stopped talking, the children stayed indoors, but Pell went down to the water each morning and sat on the bank with his head to one side, listening for the bell of St Aldo's that had gone under the ice at Martinmas.

Tam Greave, who rang that bell, had given his heart to it when he was young, the old women said, so when the bell sank, Tam's heart went with it and he lay in his bed grey as ash. Nobody believed a dog could mend that. Pell only knew that the sound had gone out of the world, and he could not sit still until it came back.
On the ninth morning the ice groaned and cracked along its length. Pell went out onto it one careful step at a time, his forelegs spread the way a dog stretches toward a warm hearth. He found the hole where the bell had gone through, pawed at the black water, and then did what no one had thought to try: he lay down over the gap and pressed his warm side to the ice until it thinned into a pool and the bell rose, green with weed, into the thin light.
They carried the bell up the hill on poles. Tam rang it once, and his heart, which had been lying in the reeds all winter, came home to his chest. Pell lay by the tower door and did not move for three days. When the villagers finally lifted him, they found a round mark pressed into the frost where his shoulder had been, and beside it a small heart, drawn in the snow by a child who had seen the dog do it.
