Mrs Tennant kept the thread in a tin on the kitchen windowsill at Hollin Cottage, a length of black silk no longer than her forearm. Each morning before the kettle went on she tied one more knot into it, spaced a finger's width from the last, and each evening she counted them with her thumb the way other women said a rosary. By the second week of March there were nineteen knots, and the village had stopped asking her how she was.

The silk had come from the haberdasher in Sallow Lane, the same shop that had sold her husband his braces and her mother her mourning veil. Harold had wound the spool himself the winter before he went out on the Mary Ellen. He said a knot was only a promise you could feel with your fingers. He did not come back from the herring grounds, and the Mary Ellen did not come back either, and the sea kept its own counsel about it.
On the twentieth morning young Pearce, the postman, with his bicycle clips still on, stood at the gate and did not come up the path. He held out a brown envelope with a Grimsby postmark. Inside was a brass key and a page torn from a logbook, written in pencil. The boat had been towed into harbour with a broken rudder, and the crew were sleeping at the Seamen's Mission until the tide turned.
Mrs Tennant went to the tin and cut the silk at the nineteenth knot. She did not tie a twentieth. She threaded the brass key onto the cut end, pressed the knot tight with her thumb, and wound the length twice around her wrist, where it sat cold for a moment before it warmed. Then she put on her coat and went to find the bus.
