Geometric lotus on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower drawn in black linework sits within overlapping circles, with long lines extending down the arm that end in small diamond shapes. The outline is a consistent black line with no shading or fill, and the design is set against plain pale skin. The bloom sits at the top of the composition while the trailing lines reach toward the wrist.

Ada had been sent up to the attic of Hollin House with a bucket because the tide had found the cracks in the ceiling again. Mr Felling, the lodger in the back room who had paid three months in advance in coins, was already kneeling by the window with a set of brass compasses and a roll of paper weighted down with pebbles.

"Hold this," he said, and handed her the end of a plumb line, a thin cord with a small diamond-shaped lead at its tip. He had been dropping them off the pier all week, he explained, to measure how the swell rolled under the circles he kept drawing. Each circle, he said, was a place where the water had once stood perfectly still. Ada didn't believe him, but she held the cord taut while he marked the paper.
The drawing was a flower, the sort her grandmother had called a lotus, built from overlapping rings until its petals seemed to open out of arithmetic. Long fine lines ran down from its heart, each ending in a little diamond. "Where do they go?" she asked. "Down," he said. "Everything in this town is going down, Ada. The trick is knowing how far."
The next morning the tide had drawn back further than she had ever seen. In the wet sand below the pier ran a line of small diamond-shaped dents, each one a little deeper than the last. Mr Felling's room was empty, the paper gone, and only a single compass remained on the sill, its point set exactly where the bloom would have been. Ada stood on the wet boards and counted the marks until the water came back and covered them.
