Fine line script on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and head, with dark hair pinned up and a drop earring visible. A small single word in thin black script runs across the skin below the hairline, with a continuous line extending from the lettering. The background is pale and softly lit, and the tattoo is the only ink in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The carter from Qarra swore the road to the salt flats had moved overnight, and by noon the whole caravan agreed with him, because the milestones they had counted on the way out were gone and a new cairn stood where the spring used to be. Old Teodor did not argue. He unrolled the cord he kept in his sleeve, tied a knot at every hand's breadth, and laid it across the sand in a long wavering line, the way his mother had taught him to measure a route that had no maps.

His daughter Mira watched him work and said nothing, because she had heard the story often enough to know it would come when he was ready. A cord, he told her, was only a road that had agreed to lie down. The knots were the places where a person stopped and was sure of themselves. The loose stretches between were where the world got its say, and a good walker learned to trust those as much as the knots.

They followed the cord for three days. It bent around a dry well, climbed a ridge of white stone, and dipped into a hollow where someone had once left a clay bowl of figs for travellers who never came back. On the fourth morning the knots ran out, and Teodor pressed the last loose end into Mira's palm and told her to keep going.

She walked on past the edge of the flats with the cord trailing from her hand, a thin dark thread unspooling over the pale ground. When she looked back, the line was still there behind her, marking where she had been, and ahead of her the sand was already drawing a new one.
