Fine line script lettering on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is held up against a dark wooden table, showing a single line of black cursive script lettering that runs diagonally from wrist towards elbow. The linework is thin and even, with small variations in weight where the strokes loop. The background includes a lined notebook page with handwritten script, a floral brown and cream mug of milky tea, and a soft, slightly warm light.

Dear Tom,

The lettering on the lifeboat house came down on Tuesday, and Mr Pryce asked me to carry the old board to the yard before the tide turned. You remember Father's hand on it. He painted the words in one pass with a squirrel-hair brush and no pencil, because he said a pencilled line was a line you were frightened of. IT IS WELL, in the long cursive he learnt from the copybooks, the T's crossed low and sweeping, the W looping back on itself like a rope coiled on deck.
I sat on the slipway with the board across my knees and traced the loops with my thumb until the varnish went tacky. The gulls were squabbling over a crab. Mrs Hoskins came down with a flask and asked if I'd like a cup, and I said yes before I'd thought about it, which is how I knew I'd been crying.
What I wanted to tell you is this. Clearing his bench, I found a notebook where he had practised the phrase a hundred times, each line a little looser than the last, until the final one ran off the edge of the page like a wake behind a boat. Underneath, in pencil, he had written: Nell will want to know how to end a line. So I have been practising too, most nights at the kitchen table with the kettle going cold beside me. I enclose the best of mine.
Your sister, always, Nell
