Fine line script 'Love' on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the word Love written in a thin, continuous black script across the inner wrist. The linework is delicate and even, with the letter O drawn as a small loop and the final e trailing off in a flowing stroke. The ink is solid black and the composition is close and slightly angled, with an open book and a grey sleeve visible in the background.

Dear Ruth, I have been meaning to write since the ferry was cancelled in March, and the Spanish book I bought in Bilbao has not helped. Chapter nine is called Expresar causa, which means giving reasons, and I have been trying to explain to the reservations desk in Santander why our room should stay booked. Carmen at the desk listens with her pen tapping against the ledger and says, "Lo antes posible, señor," as soon as possible, which is the only phrase I have got right all week.

I wanted to say something else. The book has a page on urgency and a page on apologies, but nothing on what a man should say to a woman who has returned his umbrella twice, once in the rain and once in the sun, which I suspect is a joke she is making at my expense. I wrote the word amor on a scrap of paper and crossed it out, because the book says it is a noun for love and also for grief in certain songs, and I did not want to be ambiguous at a front desk.
On Thursday she found the scrap under the till. She read it, folded it once, and wrote underneath in neat capitals: LOVE, FOR THE ENGLISH. Then she went back to the ledger as if nothing had happened, and I stood there holding the umbrella, understanding perhaps one word in five.
