Infinity symbol with a cross on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin black infinity symbol on the inner wrist, with a small cross sitting above the upper left loop. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is set against pale skin. The background is a blurred car interior, and the composition centres the wrist and tattoo in the frame.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp can reach your face, because I'm too old to shout over the generator. You know the Ferrante Brothers' Travelling Wonder? Four wagons and a tent with more patches than canvas. In the last good summer, before the council took the common, they had a wire walker called Mabel Quirke who crossed the ring every evening on a figure of eight. Not a circle, mind. A figure of eight lying on its side, the way the sign is painted on the ticket board. She said a circle goes nowhere and a line just ends, but the eight keeps coming back to the middle where it started.

Her brother Tom, who drove the lead wagon, had a wire of his own to cross, and his was rust. Every night before the show she stood at the centre crossing, where the two loops meet, and tapped the wire three times with the little brass cross from their mother's coat. Good luck, the ringmaster called it. Mabel called it a kerb to step off from.
Then came the autumn the bank came calling and the tent came down for good. Tom sold the lead wagon and went north, and Mabel was left with a coil of rope, a cross and a field outside Carlisle. She did not walk the wire again for a year. When she finally did, in a borrowed village hall with one bulb hanging over it, she walked the eight, came back to the middle, and tapped the wire three times. Nobody clapped. She said that was the best part.
