Heartbeat line on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black tattoo of a heartbeat trace runs horizontally across the inner wrist, made of thin lines with small peaks and troughs. The linework is crisp and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The pale skin, hand with red nails and wooden floor in the background frame the tattoo in a casual, close-up photograph.

Rain drummed on the tarpaulin over Dorota's stall, pooling in the dip where the awning sagged, and water dripped off the brass scales onto a tray of cracked thermometers. Kieran had been standing under the gutter for ten minutes with a cardboard tube tucked under his coat, pretending he was not waiting for a price.

"It's only paper," he said at last, and unrolled it across the trestle. It was a long strip of thermal paper gone the colour of weak tea, marked with a dark line that climbed and dropped in sharp, nervous peaks. Someone had written a date in biro along the margin, and beneath it a single word in capitals that had faded to almost nothing.
Dorota had sold a hundred of those machines in her life, boxed and labelled for hospitals that no longer existed, but she had never been handed a trace before. She ran a thumb along the peaks the way her mother used to read tide tables. "Your father's?" she asked. He nodded. For a moment the rain eased, and in the quiet she could hear the man across the aisle shouting about cheap knives.
She rolled the paper back up slowly. "Forty pounds," she said. "And you take the tea."
Later, when the market had emptied and the gutters ran brown, Dorota held the strip against her lamp and counted the peaks with one finger. Eleven across the width of her palm. The paper had kept the beat of a man who was gone, and she thought how strange it was that a line so thin could hold so much weight. Outside, the rain kept on, and she found herself breathing to its rhythm.
