Fine line hummingbird on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small hummingbird in hovering pose is drawn in thin black linework, with its wings lifted and a single curling line trailing from its tail. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist of a hand raised towards the top of the frame, and the skin is shown in warm, soft lighting. The background is a cream textured fabric, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour.

The hummingbird had been hanging over the sugar roses for a full minute before Hettie noticed it, and by then the groom's uncle was reaching for the nearest slice of lemon drizzle with the confidence of a man who had never once been told no.

"Don't you dare," Hettie said, and he froze with his fingers an inch from the plate. Nobody in Hampshire had ever seen a bird like that, least of all in a marquee in late June. It was no bigger than a thimble, green-backed and quick, its wings a grey blur that somehow stayed perfectly still in the air. Behind it trailed a single dark line, thin as a pulled thread, that curled at the end like the flourish on a signature.
"It's come for the syrup," said Nell, the bride, who had appeared at Hettie's elbow in a dress that smelled of hairspray and cut grass. She had filled a jam jar with sugar water that morning, a joke she'd promised her gran she would make work. The bird dipped its needle beak in, once, twice, and then it was gone over the hedge towards the church spire.
The speeches went on for an hour. Hettie cleared the tables, scraped the candles, and found the jam jar on the windowsill, still sweet at the rim. She filled it again without telling anyone, set it under the lilac, and left the window open a crack.
