Close-up of a fine line black script lettering tattoo reading we're all mad here, placed across the forearm.

Fine line script quote on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of delicate cursive lettering sits across the forearm, reading as a short quote. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The text is centred on a plain, softly lit skin background, so the lettering is the clear focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, pull that chair closer, love, the tea's stewed but it's wet. You'll want to hear this before the lights go down on Ward Seven, because it happened on a night like this one, when the lifts were groaning and somebody in bay three kept asking for his teeth.

There was a porter called Dennis Pell who worked the night corridors with a trolley that squeaked in B flat. He kept a notebook where he wrote down everything the patients said, because he reckoned the daytime staff never listened properly. Most of it was rubbish. Where's my husband, who moved the chairs, is it Tuesday. But one night a woman in side room four, not much older than my daughter is now, looked at him over her reading glasses and said, Dennis, we're all mad here. He wrote it down. When he asked her what she meant, she only laughed and said the consultant had told her the same thing that morning.

Dennis went home and couldn't sleep, so he took his notebook down to the canal and read the line aloud to the ducks. A man walking a whippet stopped and asked if he was all right. Dennis said he was only checking whether it was true. The man said it was, mostly, and then asked if he could borrow a pen.

The next shift, side room four was empty and the bed made up tight as a drum. Dennis carried that notebook in his pocket for thirty years after. He never found out her name, only the line, and that was enough to get him through the bad nights. So when the ward goes quiet like this, I tell the new ones the same thing. Write down what people say. Somebody has to keep a record of who we were on the nights we were odd.
