We're all mad here script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black script tattoo on a pale forearm, reading "we're all mad here" in flowing cursive lettering. The linework is thin and even, with some tapered strokes and a slightly shaded look in the taller letters. The ink is black on a plain, softly lit background, so the lettering is the clear focus of the composition.

You find the ledger on the second night, wedged beneath the stove where the damp cannot reach it. The keeper before you wrote the weather in a neat, sloping hand for eleven winters: snow depth at the cairn, mules through the pass, the hour the hospice bell was rung. Then the columns stop in February. Below the last figure, pencil pressed so hard it has dented three pages, someone has written we're all mad here.

You laugh at first, alone with the wind leaning on the shutters. Then you turn back through the pages and notice the entries are not mad at all, only lonely. The same brisk handwriting records the same brisk facts while the drifts climb the north wall, as if the keeper had decided that counting things was the same as keeping company. On the last page, beneath the pencilled line, there is a second entry in a steadier hand: Stove lit. Bread set. Bell not rung. Nobody came up.
You take the pencil from the tin on the sill and open a clean page. The radio gives only static, so you write the date and the depth at the cairn, and then, because the book seems to want it, the same words underneath. Your letters lean the way hers did, as if the wind had taught them both the same slope.
At dawn the cloud lifts off the col and a line of lamps shows on the zigzag road below, slow and sure. You count them as they come, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and write each number down. Then you shut the ledger, set the kettle on the stove and go out to meet them.
