Fine line script quote on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies on white bedding in a grey t-shirt, with her arm extended across the frame. A thin black script reads my hope is in god across the skin of the upper arm, with the letters set in small, uneven joins. The ink is a dark black-brown on light skin, and the soft white background keeps the focus on the lettering.

The ferryman at Sallow Ford had one rule: he took no one across the river without a line written on paper, and the line had to be in the hand of someone who loved them. Mostly it was a mother's hand or a sister's. Ada Mirwen came down to the bank one wet March with a satchel and a letter her brother had sent from the far side, folded so many times the creases had gone soft as cloth.

The ferryman, Tobiah Crane, unfolded it under his lantern and could barely read the hand. The letters ran into one another, small and uneven, the joins wandering like a path through brambles. It said only: my hope is in God. Nothing else. Ada laughed, because that was what her brother always wrote when he had no money and no plan, and she had walked nine days to hear him say it again.
Crane said a few words were not enough to pay the fare. She said they were the only words her brother had ever written that she trusted. They argued until the tide turned. Then Crane looked at the paper once more and saw that the last letters had been pressed harder, as if the pen had been held by someone who knew there might not be another chance to write. He pushed the boat off without taking a coin.
On the far bank a guard with a cold ledger asked for her papers. She gave him the letter. He read it, read it again, and handed it back without a word, only lifting his hand to wave her through. Ada kept that paper in her sleeve for the rest of her life, and the ferryman's rule was never written down anywhere.
