Sister script on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A collage of three photographs showing the word sister written in thin, cursive black script on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the lettering sits at slightly different angles across the three views. The white bedding and beige knitted textile in the background keep the focus on the ink.

Your hand still runs uphill at the end of every line, and I knew it before I had the seal broken.

Prior Edwin has decided the psalter must be finished by Lady Day, so the cold room is ours until the candles run out. I have taken your place at the east window, where the light comes in flat over the desk and the ink does not skin over as quickly. You would laugh at how neatly I form the letters now. Nobody here writes a word without a ruled line to measure it against, and I still cannot make the final s lie down.
You asked whether the bell rope has been mended. It has, though Brother Osric now rings it a half-beat late, and the whole valley hears the hesitation. I think of you each time, standing in the tower with your hands raised, waiting for the count to come round to you.
Write back soon, and write as you always did, without stopping to be sensible. Tell me what the market town is like, whether they have finally put a roof on the chandler's, and whether the cat from the mill still follows you home. Leave the last line open. I will keep the page on my desk until you fill it.
