Five small birds in flight on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a pale forearm and wrist with five small black bird silhouettes arranged in a diagonal line, each bird slightly smaller or angled differently to suggest movement. The birds are drawn with clean, simple solid shapes rather than detailed feathering, and the ink is a dark, uniform black. The composition is tightly cropped on the arm against a white knitted cardigan and dark hair, with the wrist and birds placed centrally.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The birds had been following the Marigold since the Ness light dropped behind the swell, five of them, strung out against the grey like a dropped stitch. Skipper Haldane swore they were kittiwakes. Tomas thought them too slight for that, but he had only been aboard since March and kept his opinions in his sea boots.

They worked the grounds all morning, hauling cod that came up silver and furious, gutting until their knuckles split. Each time Tomas straightened he looked for the birds. They rode the wind off the port quarter, never settling on the gulls' rail and never dipping for scraps, as if they had somewhere to be and had only stopped to check the boat was still there.

By four the glass had fallen and the sky to the west had gone the colour of wet slate. Haldane muttered about the weather and ordered the nets brought in early. Tomas stood at the bow with spray in his teeth and counted again, four now, then three, the flock thinning as it went. The last bird banked hard and turned for the harbour wall, where a single lamp had just been lit.
