Fine line black tattoo of a small daisy sprig tied with a bow on the forearm, with script lettering above it on the same arm.

Daisy sprig and script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm rests on a quilted white bedspread, showing a small sprig of two daisy-like flowers with leaves and a tied bow in delicate black linework. Above it, thin cursive script lettering runs across the arm. The ink is black only, with simple, open composition and plenty of unmarked skin around the designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bunch my father tied for the lodgers was never more than three daisies and a length of grey ribbon, because he said anything fussier wilted from embarrassment. I carried them up the steep lane to the Cantoni house every Tuesday while the fishing boats were still out past the breakwater, and every Tuesday Signora Marra made me wait on her step while she found a coin she had hidden in the sugar bowl.

The summer I was fourteen she asked me whether the moon came in on the tide at Porto Fenice. I said it did, because I had never been further than the harbour wall and believed everything the sea told me. She laughed, wrote a line on the back of a brown envelope in a looping hand I could not read, and told me to keep it for when I went to find out for myself.

I did not go for years. I stayed to mend nets, sell the flowers and watch the lights come on across the bay. Then in October the flower stall was boarded up, the lane fell quiet, and the envelope was the only letter I had left from her. I carried it onto the first ferry with a bunch of daisies gone brown at the edges, tied with the same grey ribbon.

The moon was rising over the water when the boat docked, huge and low, exactly as she had said it would be. I laid the flowers on the stone quay where the tide could reach them and read her words aloud to nobody. A gull complained somewhere behind me, the water came in as it always does, and I found I was no longer waiting to be told what the sea would do.
