She folded the page twice and tucked it into the tin with his old pocket watch, the one with the cracked glass that he had left on the kitchen table the morning he walked to the train. Her father had said a man who wanted to come home would find his way, and her father had not said it kindly. Ada had never believed the words were meant for anyone but himself.

He held up his hand flat against his chest and then pointed at her, and she understood before he said a word that he had carried something across a great deal of sea for her and did not want to drop it on the stones.

The watch was still ticking in the tin when she opened it that night. She set it on the sill beside the lamp, where the light would find it, and wrote one more line on the back of her letter: I am with you, and I have never once stopped being.
