"I am with you" script on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of the words "I am with you" written in cursive script across the skin of an upper arm. The linework is thin and even, with varied stroke weight in the loops and the capital I. The soft, evenly lit skin and diagonal framing keep the lettering as the clear focus.

You have the ovens lit by four and the flour is already in the air, settling on your forearms like a second skin. Mrs Okafor's bread order sits on the steel bench in its brown paper, and the chalk board by the door still says Tuesday though it is Wednesday now. Nobody has told the chalk.

The night baker has gone home with a cough, so the shop is yours alone until the first van arrives. You shape the dough by feel, folding it over itself the way your grandmother taught you in a kitchen above a laundrette in Leeds, pressing the heel of your hand down until the surface goes tight and glossy. Every batch wants the same patience. You have never found a faster way.

At twenty to six the window turns from black to the colour of weak tea, and a man in a hi-vis jacket taps on the glass with a coin. He wants nothing but a sausage roll and a minute out of the cold. You pass it over in a paper bag and he says, "Heavy night?" and you say no, just early, and that is nearly true.

Before the van comes you take the pencil from behind your ear and write on the back of an order slip, in the looping hand your father used on birthday cards: I am with you. You tuck it under the loaf meant for the hospice on Harrow Road, then stand a moment in the warmth, listening to the ovens tick as they cool towards morning.
