Small script word on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in an olive shirt, black top and dark trousers holds a black leather handbag and wears black sunglasses tucked into her top. A small, thin black script word is inked on the inside of her upper arm, with the lettering clearly outlined and filled in solid black. The photo is taken in daylight against green foliage, with the framing cropped below the neck and above the hips.

The ink on the last envelope is still wet when the drone drops it at your feet, which is the first wrong thing. Nobody in Fenmouth has posted a letter since the relay towers went dark, and the handwriting on the front is your own, slanted the way you were taught at the Wrenfield school before the floods took it. The seal is a thumbprint in grey wax. You turn the envelope over twice before you break it.

Inside is a single word in a looping script you haven't used since you were nine: Return. Nothing else. The paper smells of the pressed sage your grandmother kept in her coat, and the back of the sheet holds a tide table for a year that hasn't happened yet. You sit on the sea wall with your boots in the brine and try to remember who you were supposed to be writing to.
By noon you have walked the length of the drowned high street, past the chapel with its bell hung in the reeds, to the dry shed where the old postal ledgers are kept. Every page is in your hand. Every entry is dated tomorrow. The final line says you collected the letter from the wall and carried it back, and the signature is already there, waiting.
You take the pen from behind your ear and write one more word beneath the first, slowly, so the loops close: Yes. The drone takes the sheet away over the water, and the tide, for the first time in years, goes out.
