Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a single word, joy, written in a flowing, looped cursive script on the outer lower leg. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink, with no shading or fill. The image is a close, slightly angled shot with a soft blurred background and the wearer's feet and dark skirt visible at the top.

I told him that was only the ivy pulling. He did not laugh, which is how I knew he had been counting the ivy too.

The real surprise was in the chapel undercroft. Beneath the rubble we found a little ledger, damp as bread, with a single word written across the first page in a loop of brown ink that goes up and down like a skipping girl. Joy, it says, and then nothing else for forty pages, only columns of sums that come out wrong no matter how many times Oswin adds them. I think the steward kept the ledger for his own amusement. Who writes a single word at the top of accounts?
I have decided to keep it on my desk where the sun falls at four o'clock. When the wind comes through the broken arrow slits it turns the pages for me, and every time it does I think of you laughing at my bad French on the coach to Calais. Come in June, before the bailiffs make their inventory. Bring the good pen, and do not let Father talk you out of the cake.
Your loving sister, Hélène
