Black fine line wave tattoo on skin
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a row of black wave-shaped curves across a section of tanned skin with fine body hair. The linework is thin and even, with smooth scrolling peaks that repeat from left to right and run out of frame at the edge. The background is a plain, pale grey-white wall, and the composition is tightly cropped to the tattoo and the curve of the limb.

Every July the Mermaid House fills with people who want the sea to do something for them, and I let them have their rooms and their opinions about the damp. The Ashworth boy came down on the Saturday train with a tin of watercolours and a bicycle he couldn't ride up the hill. He ate his breakfast standing at the sideboard, reading the tide table aloud as though it were a serial.

The tide table was my husband's habit. Walter used to draw a wave beside every high water in the ledger, one loop for each hour, the pen running off the margin before he could stop it. I kept the ledger after he went, and I kept the waves. The lodger saw them on the desk and asked what they meant. I told him they meant the sea came in twice a day whether or not anybody was ready for it.
He took the pen one evening and drew a row of scrolls along the top of the page, tight and even, the way a child draws when it wants to be sure of the shape. Then he turned the sheet over and went on drawing so that the line ran off the paper and onto the oilcloth. He laughed when I told him the oilcloth was the only thing in the house that never complained.
Walter would have said the boy had a hand for it. On the last morning I found the ledger open at a fresh sheet, a single wave started in the top corner and left to run past the edge, as if whoever drew it had known it would keep going without them. I did not tidy it. I wrote the day's high water beside it and let the pen take the rest.
