Fine line script word on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A delicate single-line script word, L'espoir, is tattooed across a limb in a black and white photograph. The linework is thin and even, with a flowing cursive form and small accent mark over the final letter. The ink is solid black against soft, blurred skin tones, and the word sits centrally with a plain background.

Rain drummed on the tarpaulins of the Saturday market in Boulogne, and the crowd pressed in under the awnings to hear old Fabrice Lenoir, who had been writing other people's letters at the corner stall since before the harbour wall was painted. He rapped his wooden box of pens and raised his voice over the gutters. 'Every letter I write, I write in my own hand, but there was one winter when my hand wrote only one word, and I will tell you which.'

That was the winter his father, Anatole, rowed out past the breakwater and did not come home. The family sat at the kitchen table with a single sheet of paper and a nib that was running dry. There was money for nothing, and no one to pay for a clerk's time, so his mother wrote the only word she could spare. She wrote L'espoir in a thin running line, and when she came to the last letter the ink caught and she gave it a small flick, an accent to hold the word together. Then she pinned the sheet to the door of the net shed, where the fishermen would see it on their way to the boats.
On the third morning Anatole came up the shingle with a broken oar and a face like salt. He read the paper standing in the drizzle. The accent had run in the wet, and the mark above the last letter had lifted clean away, like a bird off a wire. He said nothing. He folded the sheet into his shirt and kept it there until he died.
Fabrice taps the box again and smiles at the crowd. 'That is why I always draw the little accent last,' he says, 'so it can fly off if it wants to.'
