Be happy script with a heart on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script reads be happy, with the final stroke looping into a small outlined heart at the right. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading, and the text runs horizontally across the forearm. The photograph is black and white, with a dark leather-like background behind the arm.

Dear Ada,

The hooter went at six this morning and Dad was up before it, sitting on the step with his boots unlaced and not putting them on. I made him tea and he drank it cold without a word, which tells you more than any letter could. Mr Pryce says the seam at Number Four is wet and they'll be on short time until the pumps are sorted, so the rent is a worry again. I have sold the good clock to Mrs Tully for two shillings and she didn't haggle, which frightened me more than anything.
Do not come home for it. I know you are thinking of it. I can read you like the back of a ration card. You have a position in Newcastle with a family who pay you properly, and that is worth more than sitting up with us in the damp.
Mam kept the wireless on last night, the dance music from the Palace in Durham, and made me dance round the kitchen table with her until the kettle boiled over. Dad watched from the doorway and pretended he was too old for such nonsense. Then he went upstairs and came down in his good coat and asked if we'd walk to chapel with him, though nothing was on. We walked anyway, and he held the gate for us both.
I have written this on the back of his wage slip so the paper isn't wasted. Be happy, our Ada. I've put the heart at the end because you used to draw one on my palm when I was small, and I never once thanked you for it.
Yours, Nell
