Mountain peaks and crescent moon on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo of a jagged mountain range sits on the ankle, with a small open crescent beneath the peaks. The linework is thin, unshaded and black, and the skin is fresh and slightly reddened around the design. The composition is centred on the ankle, with a gloved hand holding a tissue at the lower edge of the frame.

Right, sit down, the lot of you. The urn's only just boiled and Mrs Pargeter has been eyeing the biscuits since the bell went. Forty years since you sat in Form Four under my nose, and I still know which of you pinched the chalk. Now I'll tell you the one about the mountain that tried to keep the moon, because that's what your grandmothers told me when I was small enough to be sent out for coal.

Up behind Carrick Edge there was a range of peaks so sharp they tore the cloud into rags. Every night the moon came up over them like a lantern on a string, and every night the peaks reached up with their jagged fingers and tried to hold it back. Nobody in the valley thought much of it. The sheep didn't mind, and the postman had stopped looking up years before.

But a girl called Ada Lowther, who kept the ferry at the reservoir and had hands like wet leather, noticed the moon was getting thinner. She rowed out one night with a lamp and a pocketful of string, and she found the tallest peak had snagged the moon by one edge, like a hook in a coat. She pulled. The peaks groaned. The moon came free, but a bit of it stayed behind, and that's why the sky is never quite whole.

Now, I'll not have anyone asking me where Ada went after. She went to Canada, and she wrote once a year, and every one of those letters had a little drawing of a crescent in the corner. That's all you're getting, so drink your tea.
