The lift has been out since Tuesday, so you take the stairs with a torch clamped in your teeth and spare bulbs knocking together in the canvas bag. Nine floors of cold concrete breathe up at you. On the landing between six and seven a window has been left open, and the wind carries the smell of wet pavements and someone's onions frying.

Flat 7C belongs to a retired lighthouse mechanic called Desmond Affleck, who the council stopped writing to years ago and who keeps a brass telescope aimed at nothing but the sky. Tonight his door stands ajar. The telescope lies on its side on the carpet. On the windowsill, where your torchlight finds it, sits a pendant: a seven-pointed star cut from grey metal, its crown threaded through a ring, and below it a long drop shaped like a tear that has forgotten how to fall.

You pick it up. It is warm, which it should not be. Under it is a scrap of paper in his square capitals: FOR WHOEVER CLIMBS THE STAIRS. KEEP THE FAR LIGHT BURNING. You carry it up to the roof, where the wind pushes at you like a crowd at a bus stop. When you hold the star up, a thin line of light leaves it and runs out over the estate, over the car park and the dead roundabout, all the way to where the black sea sits beyond the docks.

A ship's horn answers from the water, low and patient. You stand there until your arm aches, and then you lift it higher.
