Fine line spiral design on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a fine line tattoo on the upper back, close to the shoulder. The design is two open, hook-like shapes, each ending in a tight spiral, set at an angle across the skin. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the image is greyscale with a soft background.

Hush now, the rain is only rain, and the fish will keep until the bell. Listen. Down at the harbour market, in the year the tide came up the steps, there was a smith called Oda Penn who could never make a thing straight. Every hook she hammered came out curled at the tip, like a wave deciding whether to break.

The fishermen laughed at her crooked iron. Then one night a whirlpool took the lamp off the Gull Stair, and every boat that followed the light went round and round until the men were sick with it. Oda went down to the water in her apron, carrying two hooks still hot from the forge, and she threw them in one after the other. The first caught the current by its tail and held it still. The second caught the first, and the curl in its tip unwound into a long pale line that pulled the boats home.
The rain had not stopped when the last boat came in that morning. Oda's hooks hung on the wall of the fish shed for forty years, and nobody ever bought them, because you do not sell a thing that has already done its work. Children were told to touch the curl at the tip for luck, and most of them did, and most of them forgot why.
So when you see the old woman with the wet umbrella at the eel stall, the one with the crook in her wrist, you will know she is Oda's granddaughter. Mind the puddles. Mind the stall. And buy your fish before the bell.
