Fine line sprig tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig with five or six leaves on a thin stem, drawn in single-needle black linework. The stem extends beyond the leaves to the right, and a small tied or banded detail sits at the centre of the stem. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a dark background, with the composition centred on the design.

The cutting rode on the passenger seat for three hundred miles, wrapped in a wet tea towel and tied at the middle with a strip of red raffia, because my grandfather said a graft left loose will sulk and die. Route 50 ran ahead of us, white and dead straight, and every time the heat lifted off the tarmac the road looked like it had been poured onto a lake that was not there.

The willow had come from a dry creek bed outside Eureka, where a single tree had outlasted the mine, the ranch and the family that planted it. Nobody wanted it. Dolores at the petrol station said it was a shame, then gave me a bottle of water and told me to keep the cloth damp or I'd be sorry. Five leaves had survived the drive, pale green at the tips, and the stem ran on past them, thin as a bootlace.

At Fallon the radiator started ticking. I pulled into a lot behind a shuttered diner and sat with the engine off, listening to it cool, and I thought about leaving the thing on the dashboard for the sun to finish. Instead I unwound the raffia, pressed the cut end into a jar of creek water, and retied the band a notch looser so the stem could breathe.

By dusk the road had gone the colour of weak tea and the jar held a root the length of a fingernail, a pale hair in the murk. I drove the last stretch with the window down and the towel on the seat beside me, and when the lights of the town came up out of the flats I could see the leaves catching the last of the sun, still holding on.
