Fine line sprig tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A curved botanical sprig with small leaves and buds sits on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The linework is thin and even, and the design is rendered in solid black ink with no shading. The plain background of a white shirt and the soft-focus room keep the small tattoo as the clear focus of the frame.

The well at Hallow Cross had gone dry in the summer of the long wind, and the fisher families drew their water from the cistern under the chapel instead. Old Mabry Tull said the sprig had come up through the flagstones that same week, a thin green thing with a bud at each end, and nobody had planted it. The vicar wanted it pulled. The women wanted it left alone, because it was the first green they had seen since the boats came back empty.

Hannah Pell, who kept the ferry steps, went to look at it on a Tuesday with her sleeves rolled and a knife in her apron. She found it curled along the wall like a question nobody had asked yet. When she bent to cut it, the stem was warm, the way a sleeping dog is warm, and a voice from the chapel door said, not unkindly, that she had better ask first.
She asked. The sprig said nothing, but it leaned toward the sea, so she walked down to the steps and waited for the tide to turn. When the boats came in that evening, every one of them had a bundle of the same thin green tied to the bow, and the fish were back in the nets. Mabry Tull said that was the bargain, though no one could remember agreeing to it. Hannah kept a sprig pressed in her Bible for the rest of her life, and the wall beside the steps stayed green through every winter after.
