Fine line black constellation tattoo of dots and small star shapes across the upper back of a person with short dark hair, viewed from behind.

Star constellation line on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a person with short dark hair, showing a constellation tattoo on the upper back, below the nape and near the shoulder blade. The design is a curved chain of small dots joined by a thin dotted line, with three larger star shapes along it. The ink is black or dark grey on light skin, and the plain, softly lit background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The chart had hung above the table for eleven weeks, and Ada Pell had stopped trusting it somewhere south of the Canaries. Her father had drawn the stars himself in green ink that bled through to the back of the paper: a crooked hook of dots bending down from the northern sky, with three larger stars set along its spine like beads on a fishing line. He called it the Hook. Nobody aboard the Marigold had seen it in any almanac, and the mate, Tobias Greer, said so every evening at the change of watch.

"Your father was a fine navigator and a poor liar," Tobias said, rolling a cigarette he never lit. "Those stars aren't up there."

Ada didn't answer. She was watching the middle star, the one her father had labelled Mabel after her mother, and waiting for the horizon to firm up enough to take a sight. Twice the sun had hidden behind cloud and twice the sea had been too rough for the sextant. The third night the sky cleared all at once, the way it does far from land, and she climbed to the quarterdeck with the lamp shaded in her hand.

The Hook was there. Not where the almanac put it, but exactly where her father's paper said it would be, and when she worked the figures, the bend of it gave a latitude the almanac had never allowed for. By dawn they had raised a low grey shape with a single white tower, a rock nobody on board had charted and nobody had told them to expect.

Ada took the chart down that afternoon, folded it along its creases, and wrote the rock's position in the log beside a small ink star. Tobias read it over her shoulder and said nothing at all, which from him was an apology.
