Bird outline tattoo on the nape of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of a stylised bird, with a rounded head and wings built from looping curls, sits centrally on the back of the neck. The linework is uniform and bold with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is taken from behind, with the subject's hair pulled up and the tattoo filling the centre of the frame, while red and silver birdcage earrings and a floral top are visible at the edges.

Nell had the bird painted onto the cabin doors of the Wren before the paint on the rest of the boat had dried, because her father said a boat without a bird was just a tin tube full of coal. He had carved the first one from a bit of elm off a fallen gate near Stoke Bruerne, and by the time Nell took the tiller it had worn grey and soft from years of hands.

The trouble started at Foxton, where the lock keeper's boy kept asking to see the dove. He said his mother had one like it on her wedding card, drawn with curls for wings, and he wanted to know whether the Wren's bird was the real one or a copy. Nell told him it was the only one. It had come off the river once, she said, when they moored in a flood and the bird flew out of the wheelhouse and came back with a folded note tucked under one wing. The note said only: wait at the top lock.
She waited. Three days in the rain, reading the same half-soaked timetable, until the boy brought her a tin of biscuits and a second note, identical, in a hand she did not know. Under the lid of the tin she found a reply she had never sent: her father's handwriting, old and certain, asking her to keep the boat moving.
She cast off that evening. The bird on the door looked up the cut towards Braunston, its curled wings lifting as the boat came round the bend, and for the first time in years it seemed to be going somewhere too.
