Fine line starburst on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small starburst sits on smooth skin, made of many thin black rays that radiate from a dense central point. Some rays are solid lines and others break into dotted strokes toward the outer edge. The tattoo is in black ink only, and it sits in the centre of the frame with a hand resting at the left and a marble surface below.

The lamplighter of Vell had one rule, and it was older than the town: never light a lamp you cannot see the bottom of. You learned it the winter your father went up the tower with a flint and came down without his eyebrows. So when the fog came rolling off the salt marsh and the bell at the harbour gate stopped ringing, you took the long pole and the tin of oil and climbed the steps in the dark, counting them under your breath, because counting was what your hands could do when your eyes could not.

At the top the wick was waiting, cold as a coin. You struck the flint once, twice, and on the third strike a spark leapt out and hung in the air like it had been thrown by someone who meant it. It did not fall. It opened. Thin bright threads ran out from it in every direction, some unbroken as wire, others coming apart into a scatter of seed-points at their ends, and you understood, with the peculiar calm of the very tired, that you were looking at the shape the town would have if everyone in it had ever been lost at once and found again.
You lit the lamp. The fog took the light and gave it back in a hundred directions, and below you, one by one, the windows of Vell answered. Your father's old boots were still waiting at the foot of the stairs when you came down at dawn. You did not put them on. You stood in your socks on the cold stone and watched the last ray fade from the glass, and you thought, for the first time, that a lamp was only ever a small brave argument against the dark.
