Constellation tattoo on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small constellation of black star dots joined by dotted lines forms an open angular shape on the skin. The linework is delicate and uniform, with the stars drawn as slightly larger dots at the joins. The bare skin sits against a bright yellow knitted jumper, which makes the black ink stand out clearly.

Her mother had taught her the trick on a croft above Scalloway: find the lowest star of the angle, then let your eye run along the two arms until you reach the point that never moves. Five stars, six if the sky was clean. She had learned them the way other girls learned psalms, saying them under her breath while she peeled potatoes, and each night she pricked them into the margin of the ship's log and joined them with a dotted line of pinholes.

On the fourth morning the captain came down to ask for a course and found the galley table covered in pencil marks, the same little shape pressed out again and again on every page. He tried to laugh at it. Then the cook pointed through the hatch to a grey smear of cloud, and beneath it, faint as a bruise, a single black line of hills.

They made harbour by noon. Years later the log was handed to a new cook, who found the pinholes still standing in the margin and pressed a thumb over each one, counting them out as though they were stitches holding the page together.
