Fine line tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black line tattoo runs diagonally across the wrist, with a tiny cross-like mark at its upper end. The linework is delicate and uniform, with no shading visible. The photo is a close crop of the wrist and hand against a grey knit sweater and grey denim, with a silver cuff and ring as the main accents.

The stile at Hollin Edge had rotted through by the time Ada Brisley sent for me, so I walked the whole bridle path with a pot of white paint and a rag, stopping at every ash that had been marked before my grandfather's day. The old waymarks were worn to nothing. Only the cross on the big oak above the mill pond still showed, a small rust-coloured tick that nobody had thought to repaint.

Ada wanted the path straight. Her husband had walked it crooked for forty years, stepping round every bog and bramble, and she said the parish had never got anywhere by going around things. I took a length of waxed line from my coat, pegged one end to the cross on the oak and sighted the far gatepost over the bracken. The line went taut and dipped a hair's breadth in the middle, the way all true lines do under their own weight.
We cut through the wood that afternoon with a billhook and a farm boy who whistled the whole time. Where the line ran through a holly thicket I stood on the stump of a felled birch and called the bearing, and he chopped, and the light came down through the gap in a thin bright stripe that lay across the ferns like something written in pencil.
At dusk Ada came up the track with a lantern and looked at the stripe for a long time. She didn't say whether it was right. She only pressed a folded paper into my hand, the old deed, with the boundary drawn on it in the same faint line, and beside the cross someone long gone had written, in pencil, follow this and you will not be lost.
