Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person in a white textured top and light-wash jeans stands with one hand in a pocket, showing two small tattoos. On the inner forearm, three short vertical dashes are drawn in thin black linework, and a small curved symbol with a loop sits on the lower abdomen above the waistband. The tattoos are black on skin against a plain white background, with neutral, minimal composition.

Come nearer, the fire's better in here. You'll want to know why Hannah Dunn never let anyone touch the kitchen clock. Three knocks on the wall was the signal in our row, and every house in Shotley Bank knew it. Three short knocks meant the cage was coming up, and somebody's husband was on it.

Her Tom went down the Shotley shaft on a Tuesday with a drill across his shoulder and a heel of bread wrapped in the Chronicle. Hannah stood at the back door and listened to the wheels turn over the pit head. The knocks should have come through the chimney breast by noon. They didn't. She counted the seconds the way a fool counts coins he's already spent.

Then the deputy's boy came running up the row, chalking loops on the doors. That was the old way of telling the women the shift had gone wrong but nobody was dead. The curl meant wait. Hannah pressed her palm flat against the cold brick and waited, and that was the longest afternoon of her life, and I won't pretend otherwise.

Tom came up at dusk, grey to the eyebrows, with a split lip and a grin like a dog's. A fall of stone had caught him in the dark, and he'd lain there tapping his pick against the rail, three short, three short, until a lad on the far side heard it. Hannah never did get the clock going again. She said she'd rather hear the silence than the wrong number.
