Shaded flower tattoo on a wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A man in a red sweatshirt, grey shirt cuffs and navy trousers stands with one hand at his hip, showing a tattoo on his wrist above the hand. The tattoo appears to be a shaded floral or leaf-like design with fine linework and grey tones. The image is in soft natural colour and the composition crops the figure at the torso, keeping the tattoo and watch as the focus.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since seven, and the awning over my stall has given up holding it back. I've lost half the peonies already, their heads gone heavy and brown at the edges like old paper. Mr Okafor from the fish stall says the council will fix the guttering come spring, which is what he said last spring, so I've stopped listening and started counting buckets instead.
Yesterday a young man came to the stall with a bruised sprig of something in his hand, asking if I knew what it was. It had come off a hedge by the canal, he said, and he wanted to know whether it would root if he put it in water. I told him a cutting only comes back if you take it right, at the node, on a slant, and that most people cut it wrong and then blame the plant. He laughed at that. He kept glancing at the time while I talked, as if somewhere else was waiting for him.
Before he left he asked me to draw the leaf, so I did, on the back of a receipt with a stub of carpenter's pencil. Fern-shaped, with the veins pressed in hard and the shadowed side smudged with my thumb. He folded it into his wallet as if it were a train ticket. I hope the cutting takes. I hope it doesn't matter much if it doesn't.
Come on Sunday if the weather lifts. I'll keep the good stems back for you.
Love, Ruth
