Fine line tiara with script name on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an ornate tiara with scrolls, leaves and dotted detailing, with the word Harlow written in flowing script across its base. Thin, delicate linework and dotwork frame the design, with fine circles and a vertical dotted line running through the centre. The design is in black ink only, shown in a close, evenly lit photograph of a forearm against a plain light background.

Dear Tom,

The frost took the dahlias on Tuesday, every one of them, though the sweet peas on the south wall held out until Thursday as if they had something to prove. I have started clearing the bed by the shed the way Dad used to, one spade at a time, lifting the good tubers into a crate of damp sand for the spring. You will think me sentimental. I am.
I found his old cutting tin under the potting bench this morning. Inside were the pencil labels he wrapped in sticky tape, most of them just a rose name and a year. One said only HARLOW in capitals, with a neat row of dots beneath it, as if he had wanted to write more and thought better of it. Mum says it was the name of a stallholder at the Thrapston show who sold him the first cutting, a woman with a paper crown pinned to her hat. Mum also says Dad once claimed he had sailed to Lisbon, so I no longer trust her stories about him.
I took the tin out to the arch and knelt on the wet flagstones. The climbing rose is nearly bare now, just hips and a few stubborn bronze leaves, and its stems have grown so tangled I could not tell which were his and which were mine. I cut a length of the youngest growth, bound it to a bamboo cane with green twine, and pushed the cane into the soil beside the path.
I tied one of his labels to the stake, and under the name I added a dot of my own, in the same blue pencil he always used. Then I went in and put the kettle on. Come up at Christmas if you can. The rose will want looking at by then.
