Fine line twig on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, delicate sprig of a bare branch with thin, forked stems and a few tiny offshoots is drawn in single black lines on the upper arm, just above the elbow. The linework is light and even, and the ink has no shading or fill. The tattoo sits off-centre against plain, pale skin, with a white top and blurred background around it.

Nell watched the man from the scullery hatch. He had a pencil behind one ear and a drawing book full of forked lines, and each evening he sat by the window and copied the bare branches outside, one stem at a time, as if the wood might vanish if he looked away. On the third night he tore out a page and left it on the settle. It was a single hazel sprig, drawn with no shading at all, just thin black lines dividing and dividing again, with three small buds at the tips like punctuation.

She kept it folded in the pocket of her apron. When the thaw came, the lane reappeared with a grinding of ploughs, and the surveyor's cart went off towards Todmorden without him once looking back at the inn. That afternoon Nell walked out to the sycamore and found the rooks returned, black and loud, and above them the hazel was already greening at the tips. She pinned the drawing to the wall beside the hatch, where the cold could not reach it.
