Fine line tattoo of a small cat with an orange striped tail and tiny script beside it, placed on a forearm.

Small cat outline with striped tail on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small cat sits with its back to the viewer and its head turned up and to the left, drawn as a delicate outline. The tail curls down the side of the figure in orange stripes, and tiny handwritten script runs alongside it. The linework is thin and the colour is limited to soft orange accents and pale fills against the skin.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe what has come up the platform this week. The cat arrived on the 6.14 from Carlisle, tucked into the luggage rack of the last carriage, and nobody on that train would own to him. Tom in the signal box says he has been riding the line since spring, hopping off at every halt between here and the coast as if he had business with each one. He sits at the end of platform two with his back to the timetable boards and his head turned up towards the clock, which I take to mean he is waiting for something that is late.

Yesterday I tried to read the words that run down his tail. It is an odd scrap of writing, pale and careful, like a ticket stub someone has tried to keep dry. Mr Ashdown from the parcels office swears it is a platform number, but there has never been a platform nine in this station. I think it is a name, or the start of one, and I think whoever wrote it meant to come back for the rest.

Last night the final northbound stopped at a quarter past eleven and its doors stood open a long while. The cat rose, stretched his orange stripes out straight, and walked the length of the platform without once looking back. He did not get on. He settled again beside the bench and waited, exactly as before, while the guard blew his whistle and the lamps went out one by one down the line.

I have decided to leave the lamp burning in the waiting room for him. Someone will come for the cat, or the cat will come for someone, and either way I should like to be standing here when it happens.

Yours in haste, Eileen
