At Scarrow Halt, where the valley line gives up and starts to climb, the station clock had been wrong for forty years and nobody minded. Tomas Eyre came off the last train one November with a lantern, a tin of matches and orders to walk the old switchback up to the summit signal box, because the wire had failed again and the mountain stationmaster was snowed in with his wife.

The track went up in loops, the way old railways do when the engineers were too frightened of gradient to cut straight. Every turn brought him back over the same ground, past the same grey rock with the same lichen spread like spilt ink, and each time he reached a bend he saw the halt lamp far below and felt sure he had gone nowhere. An old platelayer had told him at the bottom: the loops are not the mistake, boy. They are how the line gets to the top at all.

He counted the turns aloud to keep the cold out of his head. Forty-one, forty-two. Near the top the loops tightened into a knot of sleepers and rust, and a small point of light sat on the last post. He lit the lantern and held it high, and the signal arm dropped with a clank that rang down the mountain like a bell.

He never once took the straight road down after that. Each winter he walked the loops again, slowly, counting, and the stationmaster's grandchildren said that from the signal box the whole climb looked like one thin line dropped from a star, with a tight coil of track at the bottom where the lamp had first been lit.
