Fine line vertical loop design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous fine line runs vertically down the page, forming a column of loops and a tight figure-eight knot in the middle, with small dotted marks at the top and bottom. The linework is thin and even, drawn in dark grey or black ink. The design sits centred on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

Dear Tomasz, the kite is still in the shed where you left it, and I have not had the heart to untangle the string. You will laugh at that. Your grandfather would have had it coiled and hung on the nail by now, but I keep finding new knots in it, each one a little tighter than the last, as if the wind had been working at it all winter.

The lighthouse man came up from Porthleven on Tuesday to see about the gutter. He stood in the yard looking at the string where it ran from the drum up over the wall and said a line like that could carry a message the whole length of the bay if you knew how to tie the loops. I asked him what message. He only shrugged and drank his tea, and I thought about the figure-eight you tied the week before you went back to London, the one you said was a fish hook for keeping the kite from slipping.

I went out last night with a torch and found the weight still hanging from the bottom of the string, a little brass thimble with the paint worn off. It was swinging in the dark over the flagstones, small and patient, the way you used to stand at the wall waiting for the gust to come. I did not pull it. I left it to tell you the wind is still there.

Ring on Sunday if the signal holds. Bring nothing but yourself. Love, Nan.
