Fine line wave on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, continuous black line forms a small stylised wave that curls from left to right across the inner forearm. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading or fill. The ink is set against pale skin and a dark houndstooth fabric, which gives the photograph a high-contrast, simple composition.

Maud Penhallow had been told by three printers that a wave could not be drawn in one breath, and by her father that it could not be drawn at all. She sat at the kitchen table in St Ives with the wedding invitations spread out like a hand of cards, forty-two cream cards waiting for a mark that would tell the guests what kind of day to expect. Her cousin Ellis wanted a dolphin. Her mother wanted nothing, which was worse.

She took the fountain pen her grandfather had used for customs ledgers and rested the nib on the corner of the first card. The trick, he used to say, was to stop thinking about the water and watch the curl where it breaks. She let the line run from left to right, lifted at the crest, dropped down the back of it, and did not lift again. The ink did not blot. Her hand, which had shaken all week, held.
By nine o'clock the table was buried in spoiled attempts, and only one card was left. Ellis came in from the yard smelling of tar, read over her shoulder, and said nothing for a long moment. "That's the one," he said at last. "Looks like it's going somewhere."
On the day, the card sat on the register table beside a jar of sea glass. Maud watched the groom's aunt run a finger along the single stroke and smile at it as though it were a signature. Afterwards Maud kept the spoiled cards in the drawer under the stairs, every crooked one of them, and took them out now and then to see how far her hand had come.
