Her brother's boat, the Marigold, had gone out past the breakwater at dawn and had not come back by dusk. The harbourmaster said it was too early to fret. He said it while looking at the tide tables, not at her.

She walked the shingle until the lamps came on along Quay Street, then climbed the stone steps to the chapel on the headland, where the wind made the iron gate sing. From up there the water was the colour of pewter, and the swell rolled in long and even, lifting and folding over itself like someone shaking out a sheet. She had thought the sea was a single thing all her life. Standing there, she saw it was a line of small, separate hills, each one rising and falling without ever quite arriving.

When she came down at midnight, the Marigold was tied at the fish market with her engine ticking as it cooled. Her brother sat on a crate, grey to the lips, laughing at her with the exhaustion of a man who had been towed in by a stranger. He had lost the nets but kept the boat. Mabel did not scold him. She sat beside him and watched the harbour lights shiver on the black water, and for once she let the sea keep its own counsel.
