Small TONY HAWK lettering on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a person's lower back and hip, with a dark top pulled up and a black thong visible. A small line of capital letters reading TONY HAWK is tattooed on the skin in thin black ink with clean, even linework. The lettering sits on pale skin, and the tight crop keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The council stopped sending anyone to empty the bowl the summer the concrete cracked straight down the middle, so by August the rainwater had turned the deep end green and the kids had given up pretending they could ride it. Mrs Ogden at the corner shop still kept a broom by her till for the grit they tracked in, and she would tell anyone who listened that the trouble started with a lad called Cal Brennan and a tin of white gloss.

Cal was fifteen and had no proper board, only one with a split nose that he'd taken from a skip behind the bingo hall. He spent three weeks copying letters off the back of a magazine he'd found in a bus shelter. He painted his chosen name along the coping in capitals as tall as a hand, then stood back and decided it looked like a shop sign. So he crouched and did it again, smaller, low down on the wall of the shallow end where nobody's eyes went, and went home with paint on his cuffs and his mother's wooden spoon waiting for him.

Nobody noticed the small letters for a whole year. Then Dilys Parr, who was eleven and too shy to join in, started sitting on the lip of the shallow end every afternoon with her chin on her knees, copying each letter into a school exercise book until she could draw them without looking. When the council finally sent a digger in the spring, they filled the bowl with rubble and tipped a layer of soil over the top. The wall was the last thing standing, and the lettering was still there, straight and even, in the corner by the gate.
