Small eye and red zigzag tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are held together with their fingers interlocked against a plain dark wall. One finger carries a small black eye with radiating lash lines, drawn in clean, simple linework with solid black fill in the iris. Two fingers on the other hand bear thin red zigzag lines, and the image is lit mainly from the front, with the skin tones standing out against the dark backdrop.

The pass was shut by the time Ivo reached the toll hut, so he stood in the sleet and shouted until his sister came out with the lantern and the iron key on its cord. Behind her the dog would not stop barking. Yelena had never trusted the south road, and she had said so the morning they left, but Ivo had wanted the market at Lesk and the coins it would bring back.

Old Dragica did not open the door for coin. She took Yelena's hand first, turned the fingers palm down in the lamplight, and pressed a sooty thumb to the second knuckle, drawing a small open eye the way the carters painted them on lintels to show the mountain who was watching. Then she took Ivo's hand, laid his finger against his sister's, and bound the two together with a red thread that was already fraying.
"The pass counts what comes over it," she said. "A pair counts once. Keep your hands like that and the rock will let you through. Let go, and it will mark you as it marks a fall, a crooked line in the ice." Ivo laughed at her, but when the wind came up off the drop they did not let go. They went up in the dark with the thread between them, feeling for the path with their feet.
At dawn the crest opened under a sky the colour of pale steel, and the painted eye was there on the cairn, half hidden by frost. Ivo carried the market goods down into the valley. Yelena carried nothing, only her hand in his, and the mountain, having counted them both, looked away.
