Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown against a textured green-grey wall, each with a small black arrow tattoo drawn in fine, even linework. The upper arm also has a small cursive script inscription with a tiny heart near the wrist, and the lower arm has its arrow close to the wrist crease.

The snow had shut the Gelt Pass for nine days when Morwen Tallis went up the north side with a bow across her back and a coil of linen cord over her shoulder. Below her the village of Carrow kept its lamps lit in the windows, as though that might help anyone on the road.

Her brother Ived had gone over in the autumn with the wool carts and not come back down. The priest said the gap was too narrow to shoot across, that the wind pushed everything into the rocks. Morwen had heard this before from men who had never tried. She nocked a shaft with a pale ash fletching, the kind her father used to mark the boundary stones, and drew until her shoulder shook.
The first arrow dropped short into the drift. The second caught the crosswind and struck the far cliff with a crack like a dropped plate. The third slid over the lip of the ridge, and she heard it knock twice on stone before it went still. She tied the cord to its nock. Ived had always said the cord was the only part that mattered, and that a bow was just a way of sending string where feet could not go.
When the rope came taut on the far side, a hand pulled back. Nothing else was said across the gap, only the knots being tested one by one. By dusk the rope was a bridge of hemp over the snow. Morwen came down the pass in her brother's boots with the empty quiver on her back, and the village counted her steps as she came in.
