Small heart and lightning bolt on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black heart sits above a tiny black lightning bolt on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and simple, with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The hand is held palm up in the foreground, with a plain gold band on one finger, against a soft, out-of-focus background.

Old Vesna had kept the generator on the Ferris wheel running for thirty summers, and in all that time nobody had seen her cross the field without a spanner in her back pocket. The fair rolled into Castlemere on a Tuesday, three days late because the lorry had sulked at the Severn bridge, and by Thursday the wheel had cut out twice in the rain. Ruby Dacre, who sold candyfloss from the striped van and owed her a pound, came over with a flask of tea and found the old woman perched on an upturned crate, staring at the storm building over the hills.

"It's not the engine," Vesna said. "It's the sky. Every time it wants to strike, the wheel pulls it in." She tapped the brass plate on the control box, where someone had scratched a small heart above a zigzag. "Brian Haskett did that in 1978, the summer he proposed to my sister from the top car. Said the wheel was the only thing tall enough to make the lightning take notice of them." Ruby laughed, but the old woman didn't.

The storm arrived sideways at eight. The lights flickered, the wheel groaned and stopped with a car full of teenagers stuck near the top. Ruby ran to the box with a pair of rubber gloves, flicked the switch as Vesna shouted instructions through the wind, and the bolt came down on the far field with a crack like a rifle. The gondolas swung back into motion, and the teenagers cheered from the sky.

Next morning the crate was empty. Vesna had left the spanner on it, with a note that said only: Keep the heart bright. Ruby did, with a rag and a tin of Brasso, every night until the fair packed up for Shrewsbury. By the time they reached the coast the scratched mark shone like new, and whenever the clouds went white over the sea, Ruby found herself looking up at the wheel rather than the sky.
